About Shirley

Shirley loved to read as a child and her love of books led her to write for children and adults. She attended Austin College, a small liberal arts college in Texas. She spent many hours inside labs and outside calling coyotes for research purposes and her love of science resulted in a biology degree. She received a master’s degree in education and spent a number of years teaching science in elementary school, middle school, and high school. She earned an ESL certification and taught a few years in ESL along the way. She started writing for Latingirl magazine, inspired by her ESL students.

Shirley wrote No Bows!, her first book, while taking a picture book writing class taught by Anastasia Suen. She went on to write a YA horror, Unthinkable, and then began writing science books.

She’s done a variety of writing, editing, teacher guide writing, and Common Core State Standards work.

Shirley currently lives in the Jemez Mountains of New Mexico. She loves nature, cooking, gardening, and (of course!) reading.
